In well-organised transport systems whether by rail, road, water or air, tickets are very important for travelling especially when the time to travel zeros in. In train stations, bus stations, seaports or airports, there are all categories of people there including travellers, transporters, drivers, pilots, sailors, traders (marketers), well-wishers and what have you? Apart from markets, few other sites are as crowded and as busy as these places where people board and disembark these different means of transport. Except for people who are having connecting flights (i.e. they are still travellers), waiting to change transport, only a few people in these stations constitute ‘arrivals’. Those arriving do not spend much time in these places before they move away to their destinations. Majority of people in the stations are either travelling or waiting for those travelling.
Long before making the journey (departure), tickets are sold to would-be travellers. The time interval between booking (buying a ticket) and departure can vary from a few minutes or hours to months or sometimes years. It is possible to be too late to get a ticket. At the zero hours, when passengers are to board, only travellers get on board and the only thing that qualifies anyone for entering the bus, train, ship or plane is that ticket and an appropriate ticket for the journey. A ticket for one destination cannot take you to another.
Indeed, many of the means of road transport we have in our land do not use tickets. The reason is that for most of them, the number of persons travelling per vehicle is small and so the person ‘loading’ can cope favourably without tickets but everybody must pay. No ticket, no entry, no travelling, and it does not matter who you are.
There is a journey you must undertake one day sooner or later, a journey to your eternal destination. One of two events can set you on that journey sooner or later than you think. One of the events is death. The Bible says that “it is appointed unto man once to die and after that judgement” (Heb. 9.27). In other words, death is an appointment which will surely come. The old die, the young die; the rich die, the poor die; the big die, the small die; the wise die, the foolish die; the sick die, the healthy die. In fact death has been referred to as universal ‘equalizer’, with no respect for persons. Though in essence, the journey to your eternal destination started the day you were born, at death your ticket is confirmed, your route is fixed and your destination is sure. The other event which can fix your route is the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible says that when Jesus comes both those who are dead (asleep in him) and those alive (in him) shall be caught up to meet with the Lord in the air and so shall they ever be with the Lord. (1 Thess. 4:16 - 18). Also Matt. 24:31 says “when He (Jesus) comes, He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call and they will gather the elect (those with appropriate tickets) from the four winds from one end of heaven to another”
Any of these two events can happen anytime for you, even today. The ticket you have determines your destination (place). For your information, there are only two destinations and it is only one you can go to; heaven or hell.
When the time for the journey sets in, everyone has a ticket; one person, one ticket, one destination. The ticket to hell which is the second death is purchased by sin (Rom. 6:23), all have this ticket including you. But you can exchange your ticket and you better do so before the time for the journey comes. The fare to purchase the ticket for heaven has been paid for. There is a man who before He was born was given a name which described the work he was going to do. “She will give birth to a son (the angel said) and you shall call His name Jesus (why?) Because He shall save His people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21). And what did He do to accomplish this unique assignment? He died for our sins according to the scriptures. Why? Because “without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin” (Heb. 9:22). And he said to Himself just before he died: “This is my blood of the new covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” Matt. 26:28. He did that because of the love of God to change your destiny and your destination (John 3:16). That is why the Bible boldly says “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father” (heaven) except by me (John 14:6). This ticket to heaven is stamped with the blood of Jesus, the blood that makes access to the throne of Grace.
Do you want to change your ticket today? Remember when the transporter arrives (death or Jesus’ second coming), it may be too late. What you must do: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (and receive Him). And you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). And your name will be written in the book of life where the names of all those travelling to heaven are, and you will get a new ticket for the journey.
